What Botox is
Botox is the brand name for a purified form of botulinum toxin type A. When injected in small amounts into specific muscles, it temporarily reduces muscle activity in that area. The cosmetic result is softening of expression lines on the forehead, between the brows, and around the eyes. The medical result, in select off-label applications, can include reducing muscle bulk or relieving muscle tension. Effects last roughly three to four months, then gradually wear off. This is a precise, dose-dependent treatment. The same product can produce very different outcomes depending on placement, depth, and the number of units used. Botox visits start at $175, regardless of how few units are used. The $100 provider exam for a first visit is separate. Total cost depends on the number of units used, which is determined by the area treated and your goals. Most expression-line treatments range from 20 to 60 units. Body applications (see below) can be 50 or more units.

Standard expression-line treatment
The most common Botox visit addresses the upper face:- Forehead lines, horizontal lines that appear when raising the brows
- Glabellar lines (the “11s”), vertical lines between the brows
- Crow’s feet, lines around the outer corners of the eyes that appear with smiling
Trapezius Botox: “trap-tox” or “swan neck”
Botox injections into the trapezius muscle along the upper shoulder. We offer trap-tox both as a cosmetic treatment and for myofascial pain in the shoulder region, commonly known as trigger points, or muscular tension. For the medical use, the Botox is mixed with lidocaine if desired and no allergy is noted. Our starting dose for new trap-tox patients is conservative: 20 to 25 units per side, or 40 to 50 units total. We evaluate your response and adjust at your follow-up if more is appropriate. An increasingly common ask from men in their late twenties and thirties: starting small, regular Botox treatments before deep expression lines have set in. The goal is preservation, not correction. Treatment typically focuses on the frontalis (forehead) and glabellar (between the brows) areas. Doses for younger male patients are often higher than for women’s expression-line treatment because male facial muscles are typically larger and stronger. A typical first treatment for a younger man on a frontalis and glabellar combination is in the 50 or more unit range. Unit counts and final cost are confirmed at the visit. This is the math to plan for.What to expect at your visit
- Brief consultation. We review your goals, your medical history, any prior Botox treatments, and any medications or conditions that affect candidacy.
- Mapping. We mark the injection points based on your facial anatomy and the look you want. For trap-tox, we map along the trapezius based on muscle palpation.
- Injections. The product is injected in small amounts using a fine needle. Most patients describe it as a quick pinch at each point.
- Aftercare. Avoid lying flat, vigorous exercise, alcohol, and rubbing the treated area for four hours. Effects begin to appear in three to seven days and reach full effect at about fourteen days.
How long your visit takes. Your first visit is scheduled for a full hour. That includes the Good Faith Exam, vital signs, a focused exam, a review of allergies, indications, goals, and contraindications, the consent process for HIPAA, photos, and Botox, the photos themselves, and the treatment. Follow-up visits are typically 20 to 30 minutes unless we are addressing a concern.
Contraindications
Per the FDA prescribing information for Botox, the treatment is not given to anyone with hypersensitivity to any botulinum toxin preparation or to any of the components in the formulation, or who has an active infection at the planned injection site. Other precautions, your medical history, and any current medications are reviewed during the consent process before treatment. Common temporary side effects include bruising and swelling at injection sites, headache, dry eyes, drooping of eyebrow or eyelid, and possible face asymmetry.
